Come see Spanish Immersion in action and find out how your child can become bilingual by age 5!
What: Open House Week
Date: Monday through Friday, April 19 - 23
Time: 12:30 - 2pm
Location: 7811 Mad River Road (1/4 mile north of 725 on Mad River Road)
What is Spanish Immersion? What is a typical day like? Do the children really understand everything? How much Spanish do children speak after six months of immersion? Are they really learning everything they need for Kindergarten?
These and other questions will be answered as we invite you to observe our Spanish Immersion class with children currently enrolled in the program. During Open House Week feel free to bring your child(ren), ask questions, look around. You will be amazed.

As of next schoolyear, area children (and parents) will have another option to choose from: Dayton International School, a non-profit Spanish Immersion School will function as a continuation of the Lingua Spanish immersion preschoolers. Starting with K and 1st grade in 2011/2012 Dayton International School will add an additional grade level each year up to 3rd grade. Students will be proficient in Spanish and English at that point and will have no transition difficulties to other schools.
Once again, small classes, highly qualified and dedicated teachers will be our priority. To find out more go to www.daytoninternationalschool.org

Open House June 5 & 6
Our second annual Open House was a huge success, and I am especially grateful to the parents and teachers who contributed before and during the event. Thank you all for spreading the word. There were so many new faces who will be attending here in the Fall!
Elizabeth and Lilli (both 5) were gratious hostesses and made sure all children got at least one cookie and something to drink. They also acted as tour guides through the school and demonstrated the various uses of the "castle" as the highlight of the tour.
Registrations for the Spanish Immersion Program has really taken off since then and we only have a few spots left to fill!

Advisory Board
Lingua Language Academy now has an advisory board. Tina Hutzelman, Laura Rubin, and Jennifer Yuker bring a variety of experiences and backgrounds to the table and together, we will be able to make (hopefully) wise decisions in all aspects of the company.

Spanish Immersion Classes
Due to the success of our morning program we have decided to add a Spanish Immersion Program starting this Fall. Just as in the German Immersion Program, teachers will use the foreign language 98% of the time, and students will learn to understand most everything after approximately 4 - 5 months. As we have seen these past months, it makes a great difference how many days a child attends in acquiring the new language. While all of our 5-days children speak in complete sentences, our 2- and 3-day children show improvement in comprehension and production, but there is a marked difference.
Registration will be first opened to current Lingua students. This class is for children from 3 to 5 years old, born between Jan. 1, 2004 and December 31, 2006. Call us for more information.

New German Immersion Teacher
I am happy to announce that Elisabeth Battle has joined our staff. Elli, as the children have named her, brings with her several years of experience in an early childhood setting in Germany where she taught English in a partial Immersion setting. She has a degree in Early Childhood Education and will be the driving force in shaping our Immersion Program for the next year. For more information on Elli, check the Staff pages for an update on her biography.

Production Diary
Check out our new notebook in the foyer. It's a small sampling of what our German Immersion Program students are capable of at this point of the year. After just six months, many children construct their own, unique sentences, which is more than some High School students can claim after the same amount of study. Best of all, our students began using the German language to communicate their needs and tell their stories. Without worrying about grammar or correct conjugations, they have acquired basic language skills naturally and stress free. The Immersion method is context based instruction at its best and the diary is concrete evidence of its merits. Next time you come in, feel free to browse the pages and see what the children have to say!

New Class: Italian!
We've added a new language to our diverse schedule. The Italian class is already very popular, with only one available spot remaining. Our Italian instructor Ellen Kibby comes to us with an array of new ideas and a natural connection to children. She grew up speaking Italian and English and has a young son whom she raises bilingually as well.

International Barbeque
On Saturday, Lingua hosted its first annual barbeque. More than half of our families attended and enjoyed the truly international food. Authentic, home-made Chinese dishes, French salad, Mexican and German pastries and cake, and rice shaped in molds of Hello Kitty - straight from Japan. There were several entertainers for the children who were busy playing games and getting cart rides.

Open House
The Open House introduced several new families to our school and gave everyone the opportunity to explore the finished classrooms and our new patio. Sign-ups for the Fall are under way and we will be able to add several more classes, including Japanese and French.

First Classes
Today, we started our first classes: German, Chinese and Spanish. After months of theory and some practise sessions it's great to finally get started. The children seem to love the environment and are having a great time exploring these new sounds and games.

Construction "Progress"
Despite a dedicated crew, we have encountered several unexpected delays. Suffice it to say that they were beyond our control and everyone is working diligently to address issues as they develop. While we had anticipated hanging pictures at this point, we are faced with bare floors and pink insulation instead of drywall. On the bright side, however, the patios and the ramp have been completed. We also have a new door leading directly from the large foyer out to the rear of the property. This was one of our primary goals as this door makes it possible to easily and safely access the large back yard for study, play and discovery times.
Next on the agenda are the bathrooms, then the kitchen. The cabinets have been delivered already and are awaiting installation. We selected warm, cinnamon-colored maple that will blend well with the home like atmosphere of the rest of the school.
Once these two areas are completed things will be moving quickly. One of the last tasks will be installing cork flooring, which we selected not only because it is a renewable resource, but also for its softness and sound reducing qualities.
Our anticipated opening date will be March 3rd. We will be updating these pages with our progress regularly, so check back for news. Once the start date is confirmed we will be accepting registration for classes. In the meantime, I wish everyone a very happy New Year 2008!
Sincerely,
Susanne

After weeks of uncertainty and interesting negotiations Lingua Language Academy finally has a place to call home. Just this morning, we signed the lease for our new school property. Lingua will be located across the street from the Dayton Mall, behind Babies'r'us, on Mad River Road. The property includes more than an acre of land, providing plenty of space for outside activities.
The building itself will be brought up to code and modified to suit our purpose in the following weeks. The garden has been neglected in the past months and will also be improved. Once construction is completed we will be adding final finishing touches inside, as well as place the furniture. We have plans for an exciting piece of equipment for the main room that the children will just love.
Thank you to those who have experienced this part of the journey with me and lent their support. I could not have done it without you!
Sincerely,
Susanne
